In 1609, the area that includes Jersey City was explored by Henry Hudson, an English navigator. In 1630, a permanent settlement was introduced. In 1820, the city was incorporated as Jersey City by a New Jersey Legislature Act, though it was a part of Bergen town. In 1838, it was reincorporated and became independent of the town of Bergen. The City of Jersey became part of the Hudson County on February 22, 1840.  With the coming of the railroad in the 1840s, the city’s industrial growth started. The city’s population expanded from 1860 to 1870 due to the economic strength of the factories and merging of several municipalities. In 19th and 20th centuries, it was a manufacturing and dock town. The city became the commercial and industrial hub for the region.
